How it works

How index trading works.

A stock index measures the combined value of a group of shares. The NAS100, for example, tracks 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq.

When you trade an index CFD, each point the index moves is worth a fixed amount per lot. Buy if you expect the index to rise, sell if you expect it to fall.

Point
The smallest whole unit of index movement, for example 18,000 to 18,001.
Contract size
One lot equals 1 × the index in its currency, so $1 per point on US indices.
Cash index
A CFD priced from the underlying, without an expiry date.
Dividend adjustment
A cash adjustment when shares in the index go ex-dividend.

Worked example

NAS100
DirectionBuy (long)
Position size2 lots = $2 per point
Opening price18,000.0
Position value$36,000
Margin required (1%)$360
Value of 1 point$2
Index rises to 18,150.0+$300
Index falls to 17,900.0−$200

Illustrative only, using hypothetical prices. Excludes spread, commission and overnight swap. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and losses can exceed the margin shown.

It is a contract that tracks the price of a stock index. You gain or lose the difference between your opening and closing price, without buying the individual shares.

US indices trade almost 23 hours a day from Sunday to Friday. European and Asian indices follow extended versions of their local sessions. See the specifications table for exact times.

When companies in an index pay dividends, the index drops. We credit long positions and debit short positions by the dividend amount so the drop is neutralised.

No. Our indices are cash CFDs with no expiry date, so you can hold positions for as long as you keep sufficient margin. Overnight swaps apply.
